Making the Leap: 5 Reasons Why Figma Is Your Design System’s New BFF

Adobe XD vs Figma

Hey there, fellow design aficionados! 👋 Ready to dive into the exciting world of tools for design systems? I feel you! Let’s talk about why Figma is like a breath of fresh air for creating kickass design systems that’ll make your heart sing. (Below are just a few of Figma’s cool features. 😊)

So, Adobe XD, you’ve served us well, old friend. But here’s the scoop: Figma is the sleek, innovative ride we’ve been waiting to hop on. First things first, collaboration is Figma’s middle name. Gone are the days of endless back-and-forths with teammates sending you different file versions. With Figma, it’s all in the cloud! Real-time collaboration means you’re all dancing to the same design tune, which is a game-changer when crafting a seamless design system that practically hums with consistency.

Design-to-Code

Now, let’s talk about that “design-to-code” magic. Imagine designing a button or a card and watching it magically transform into code snippets that developers can actually use. Figma makes this wizardry a reality, making your design system not just a pretty face but also a practical powerhouse. (And now, devs can use the new Dev Mode built into Figma.) Your developers will thank you with virtual high-fives, and your design system’s journey to pixel-perfect code will be smoother than a well-lubricated skateboard ride.

Flexibility, oh how we love thee! Figma is like that friend who’s always up for a spontaneous road trip. Design system components? Check. Prototyping for that next-level user experience? Double-check. It’s an all-in-one wonderland, offering you the flexibility to seamlessly switch between design and interaction modes without skipping a beat. Your design system will have the agility of a ninja and the charm of a charismatic unicorn – ready for whatever challenges lie ahead.

Remember those pesky handoffs? Yeah, those days are numbered. With Figma’s developer handoff features, you’re essentially handing your developers a golden ticket to Wonka’s chocolate factory – they get to see everything, from specs and assets to interactions, in one tidy package. Say goodbye to confusion, and hello to design system harmony!

Plugins

Now, let’s not forget our love for plugins. Figma’s got an expansive library of plugins that’ll take your design system from “awesome” to “mind-blowing.” Automate tasks, integrate with your favorite tools, and sprinkle that extra dash of magic onto your design process. It’s like having a personal army of design assistants that work tirelessly to make your design system the envy of the digital kingdom.

Pages for Organization

Now, I don’t want to throw any shade, but let’s talk about one of Adobe XD’s missing puzzle pieces: the inability to separate components onto separate pages. Picture this: you’re in the midst of crafting a design system masterpiece, and you’re hit with the realization that XD doesn’t let you neatly organize your components on distinct pages. It’s like trying to juggle pineapples – messy and not recommended for beginners.

XD's messy canvas

Enter Figma, our knight in shining armor. With Figma, you can create a symphony of organization by grouping your components onto different pages. It’s like having separate compartments for your design elements – buttons, headers, cards – everything gets its own cozy corner to call home. This means you’re not scrolling and panning through a chaotic canvas, but rather navigating through a streamlined design symposium where each page is a chapter in your design system’s epic saga.

Searchable Files

Here’s another pet peeve – the inability to search for files when opening on the Cloud. I can’t tell you how many times my coworker and I have scrolled endlessly while looking for that certain file one of us worked on three months ago. It would be so helpful to be able to search for a filename, but alas…

So, while Adobe XD might have some catching up to do in the organizational department, Figma swoops in with its cape of convenience, giving you the power to compartmentalize your components with grace and ease. Your design system will thank you for this tidying up, and you’ll be on your way to creating a design system narrative that’s as clear as a mountain stream on a crisp morning.

“Adobe Figma”?

Now, while we’re here celebrating the radiant glory of Figma, it’s also worth raising an intrigued eyebrow at the state of Adobe XD. The acquisition of Figma by Adobe sent ripples through the design realm, hinting at the possibility that Adobe XD might be facing a phase-out in the not-so-distant future. As of June 2023, XD is no longer available for purchase, although current versions are still supported. Let’s be real – we’ve all noticed that Adobe XD’s software updates have been somewhat… well, let’s say, less than enthusiastic in recent years. It’s like that reliable old horse that’s maybe a tad too comfortable sitting in its stable. While Adobe XD brought some fresh breezes when it first galloped onto the scene, it seems like the winds of innovation have been diverted elsewhere.

On the flip side, Figma has been soaring like a majestic eagle, soaring above its competitors with consistent updates, innovative features, and a commitment to staying ahead of the curve. It’s the equivalent of trading in your trusty bicycle for a supersonic jet – Figma’s advancements are not just flashy additions, they’re like rocket fuel for your design system dreams.

So, while Figma may one day be replaced by something new, one thing is clear: it is the shining star on the horizon, beckoning designers to step into a future that’s brimming with possibilities. It’s like getting a front-row seat to a design revolution, where innovation isn’t just a buzzword, but a way of life. The choice seems pretty crystal clear – adapt, evolve, and ride the wave with Figma, and your design system journey will be smooth-sailing.

Onward, my fellow designers, to organized design system glory! 🏰🎨
